Morning Musings: Colossians 2:8

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Our world is awash in philosophies.  Everyone seems to have one.  They are everywhere we look.  If you don’t like the one you have now, you can easily trade it out for another that looks about the same, or even another that looks totally different.  Philosophies are a dime a dozen.  There are many different doors all calling us to enter through them.  Truth, though, is something more elusive.

The one thing all these various philosophies have in common is that they are all false.  They are empty.  They are filled with deceit.  They will not lead us to the life we are seeking.  That we will only find in one place: The Christian worldview.

Still, these philosophies are tempting.  They are everywhere we look for a reason: They are convincing.  They look close enough like the real thing that for someone who is looking for a way out of the restrictive morality of the Christian faith (compared with the current morays of our culture anyway), but not yet wanting to dispense with the rest of it, they prove to be a constant draw.

For those who are interested in pursuing Christ as fully and freely as possible, we must always be on guard against the alluring call to follow one of these empty deceptions to our doom.  To play with one of these is to flirt with the demonic.  It will not ever lead to life or freedom.  It will only lead to chains.  Stay out of the traps.
