“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the God the Father through him.” (ESV – Read the chapter)
Have you ever wondered what it is you need to do in order to honor Christ? Here Paul gives us a very simple test to know whether or not we’re on track. Is it done in the name of Jesus out of a grateful heart? If so, it is going to be honoring of Him. If not, it won’t be. Simple, right?
Easy? Well…not so much. Not so much because we can decide ourselves into believing we are doing something in His name when in actuality we are doing it in our own. Things done in Jesus’ name are also done in His character. They are done in love and with the goal in mind of seeing God honored as the Lord. They are done with a heart of gratitude for all the Lord has done for us.
Often we seek a particular rubric for the kind of actions that will be honoring of Christ because, frankly, we are lazy. We want the ease and familiarity of religion rather than bearing the burden of a real relationship. We want to know which things fall on the list and which don’t so we can approach it with our minds, but not always our hearts. This isn’t what the life committed to following Jesus looks like. It engages our whole life. The truth is, the list of things that bring honor to Christ is vast. It is a list determined not so much by the particular nature of the activities, but by the attitude with which they are done.
It’s time, then, for some self-evaluation. What’s the attitude with which you are approaching life? Are you seeking to honor God or yourself? Be honest. Is your goal your own pleasure, or the leveraging of your resources for the benefit of someone else? What do you want…really? There’s life aplenty waiting for you. It is found when you deny self and make the name of Jesus your banner and guide.
