“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (ESV – Read the chapter)
Living the life of Christ day-in-and day-out is a tall order. It’s a huge task. If we let it, the thought that we are to live each day following after the pattern of Christ and doing what He said can be an overwhelming thought. If we think about it in the wrong way, it can leave us wondering whether it’s really all worth it. How are we supposed to do this on our own?
You know that’s the question the disciples had to be wrestling with on this final night with Jesus. But you see, that’s just it: When it comes to living the Christian life, we are never on our own. This was Jesus’ point here. Although they couldn’t imagine how this could be the case, Jesus was assuring them that it was better for them for Him to go back to the Father than it was for Him to stay with them.
When He went back to the Father, the two of them were going to send the Holy Spirit to be with the disciples and all the other followers of Jesus. Yes, they would lose being physically present with Him which was no doubt a nice security blanket to wear as a substitute for faith, but they would gain His Spirit’s presence within them such that they would always have Him with them no matter where they went. The Holy Spirit would not just be with them, either. He would remind them of everything Jesus said as they needed to hear it and teach them how to apply and extend it into whatever situation they happened to be facing. This wouldn’t be further revelation, but rather application of what had already been revealed.
Friends, if you are a follower of Jesus today, you have this same Spirit dwelling in your heart as well. When it comes to following Jesus, you are never alone. Ever. In every moment the presence of Jesus, dwelling in your heart via the Holy Spirit, is there to encourage you along in your journey, giving you the strength and wisdom you need as you need them, no matter what your circumstances happen to be. Expect His help and reach for it often. It will be there without fail.
