Digging in Deeper: James 1:13-14

“No one undergoing a trial should say, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone. But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire.” (CSB – Read the chapter)

Have you ever had one of those moments when you did something and then immediately thought, “Where did that come from?” I suspect we all experience that from time to time. We get caught in a raw moment and react in a way that catches us and everyone around us entirely off guard. The same kind of thing can happen with temptation. James here, though, tells us we shouldn’t be quite as surprised as we are.

One of the lessons we have been trying to drive into the hearts and minds of our boys is that our choices matter. They matter and they are powerful. The things we want, over time, define us. Saul was not simply angry here. If he were just angry he could have gotten over it and moved on. The fuller truth is that there was something deeper that was motivating his anger. Saul was envious of David. Read the rest…

Morning Musings: Ecclesiastes 2:1, 11

“I said in my heart, ‘Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.’  But behold, this also was vanity. . . .Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.”  (ESV – Read the chapter)

Pleasures pursued for their own sake will never bring us lasting joy or life.  Human desires run in a million different directions.  We can spend our entire lives seeking to see our desires met.  If we make this our god, though, we will never cease our running.  One desire will give way to another and to another and to another.  There will always be something new and better to want.  We will wind up running until our legs give out and then we will crawl until our strength is gone.  In the end, we will be left with only more unfulfilled desires.   Read the rest…
